For this weeks MMM Reads, and the week that is in it, Museum Assistant Eimear has chosen two books from our collection that are perfect for Halloween!

You can read her overview on each one below;

Haunted Ireland: Haunting Tales from an Ancient Land by David Pritchard

Haunted Ireland is filled with tales of banshees, vampires and witches, as well as a number of reported hauntings of Ireland’s castles and stately homes. Our very own Alice Kyteler makes an appearance in this colourful compendium, as do the legendary werewolves of Ossory. Illustrated throughout with haunting photographs by Liam Blake and vibrant artworks by Jim Fitzpatrick, this book will make you want to go and visit the locations mentioned, many of which are still standing to this day.

A Bewitched Land: Witches and Warlocks of Ireland by Bob Curran

Learn about some of Ireland’s most infamous witches, warlocks and wise women with Bob Curran’s atmospheric book. A Bewitched Land goes beyond the myths by exploring the social, cultural and historical context behind these stories. This book explains how the moral panic about witchcraft and sorcery which swept across Europe and North America from the 14th Century onwards affected Ireland in slightly different ways than it did other countries. Featuring the stories of suspected Irish witches such as Alice Kyteler, Florence Newton, Biddy Early and more, A Bewitched Land is a perfect Halloween read!

All of the books in our MMM Reads Series are available to purchase in our shop at the Medieval Mile Museum.
