Meet the Team at the Medieval Mile Museum – Over the next couple of weeks we want to introduce you to our team, and allow you to get to know them a little bit better!
First up is Pat Moylan…
Your role in the museum: Museum Guide
How did you get in to your role?
I have been an actor, a re-enactor, a film extra and a heritage specialist. I have had an abiding interest in storytelling and history. I have been a tour guide in a brewery but nothing is close to the “pure drop” as this is.
What is your favourite part of your job?
I love it when I see the moment of revelation when our guests discover that Kilkenny is a pivotal city in the development of Irish and European history. Or equally when the human personality of a historical character is revealed by his or her actions.
What is your favourite artefact in the museum, and why?
The letter from Bishop De Tourville allowing the Dominican monks water for their new abbey in Hightown, but makes sure they do not have enough for any practical use. Sneaky Bishop!
Favourite museum in the world, and why:
The Maritime Museum, Tallinn in Estonia. It looks like the lair of a Bond villain. Vast open concrete tent. But it is full of boats, tanks, and submarines. And everything is interactive. You can climb up or in everything there.
If you could meet a character from Kilkenny’s history, who would you like to meet and why?
It would have to be William Marshall. He is such an innovator. I would love to know what he would think of modern Kilkenny, I think he would have approved!
If you had the opportunity to ask a character from Kilkenny’s history anything, who would it be, and what would you ask them?
Alice Kytler. I wish I knew if she fled in panic from Bishop Le Drede, or was she working an agenda of her own.
Favourite attraction in Kilkenny (other than MMM of course!) :
St. Canice’s Cathedral. It is the companion piece to our museum. The same names abound. Le Drede, Butler even Kytler. It still feels like a medieval cathedral and the round tower is stunning.
