The Medieval Mile Museum LEGO® Hunt

Saturday June 30th 2018 marks the beginning of a fun new chapter in the Medieval Mile Museum as we launch the Medieval Mile Museum LEGO® Hunt!!

This summer, ten characters from Kilkenny’s history will be hiding in the Medieval Mile Museum, in LEGO® Minifigure form. The Museum’s LEGO® Hunt will be available to our younger visitors at no additional charge, but we’re not going to put an age limit on this, because you’re never too old for LEGO®. And if you find all the characters, you’ll even win a prize!

One of our staff members Hugues was trying to come up with a way for us to introduce the characters from Kilkenny’s past to our younger visitors in a fun, exciting way and most importantly, in a way that made these people relatable for our younger visitors. Then, boom! The LEGO® Minifigure Hunt idea was born! The deadly people in the LEGO® Idea House came on board and when the package of LEGO® Minifigures from Denmark arrived in the post we all felt like kids again – putting them together, developing their personalities and figuring out where they should be hidden in the museum.

Museums can be a daunting place for kids and History can be taken a little too seriously sometimes, so we are hoping to change that and help to bring these fascinating characters from Kilkenny’s past into the lives and imaginations of the children who visit the Medieval Mile Museum this summer.

One of the documents on display in the Kilkenny Room is a letter from the 1700s that complains about ‘idle women, selling unwholesome bread, half-baked in open ovens’. Well, we have decided to give one of those ‘idle women’ a name (pictured above) and ask people to think about this story from her viewpoint. Changing the way we look at these people and their stories brings with it an opportunity get a better understanding of what Medieval life in Kilkenny was like for everyone, rich and poor and the LEGO® Minifigure Hunt is an exciting way to do exactly that.

The Medieval Mile Museum is open 7 days a week, from 10am to 6pm (last entry 45 mins before close). All-day entry is €8 for adults, €6.50 for students/seniors, €4 for children and €16 for a family. Entry fee includes an interactive audio guide available in six languages and the LEGO® Minifigure Hunt.
